California Tribes Granted Extension for Sports Betting Ballot Proposition

California’s indigenous groups have been granted an additional three months to gather the necessary signatures to place their sports wagering proposal on the ballot in the year 2022. This extension was granted by a court, which extended the deadline for them to secure sufficient public backing.

The “California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act” – put forth by a coalition of eighteen California Native American tribes – would modify the state’s constitution to permit sports betting at tribal casinos and racetracks. It would also impose a ten percent levy on gambling revenue.

The proposition required the collection of 997,139 valid signatures by June 21st to be included on the ballot in November 2020. However, due to the time required to verify signatures, the initial list of signatures had to be submitted to counties by April 21st.

By mid-March, the proposition appeared likely to garner enough signatures, as it had already accumulated 971,373 signatures.

In spite of this, counties, and subsequently the whole state, promptly began enacting stay-at-home directives to restrain the dissemination of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
