ACMA Cracks Down on Illegal Offshore Gambling Websites

The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) recently took action against four more unlawful overseas wagering platforms, requiring internet providers in Australia to restrict access to them.

These platforms—Bao Casino, Pokie Place, Reels of Joy, and Ozwin Casino—were probed after the ACMA received multiple grievances. The inquiry disclosed that these sites were functioning in violation of the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.

This forms part of a broader initiative by the ACMA to limit illicit offshore gambling. Since commencing requests for these websites to be blocked in November 2019, they’ve effectively closed down access to 263 of them. Moreover, since the implementation of new regulations targeting these unlawful activities in 2017, over 130 illicit gambling services have stopped providing their services to Australians.

Restricting these websites is just one of numerous enforcement mechanisms at the disposal of Australian regulators. The ACMA stresses that this measure serves as a valuable chance to heighten public consciousness regarding the risks associated with illegal gambling operations. One approach they’re employing is ensuring cautionary messages appear when someone tries to visit one of these restricted websites.
